My internship and student teaching have only strengthened my desire to be a teacher. The students at Dundalk High made me look forward to entering the classroom, and the students at General John Stricker made me realize how big of an impact an instructor can have on his or her students. The lessons I implemented in the classroom demonstrated my constructionist views on education, and promoted students taking learning into their own hands. Stories of teachers using direct instruction day after day serve as both a reminder of how far we have come in understanding how students learn, and as an example of a method I want to stay far away from. I believe students need to be engaged in the classroom, and any opportunities to have students teaching themselves need to be taken. My willingness to change may be one of the strongest things I bring to the classroom. If it becomes clear that a method is not working, or that students are not responding to my teaching, I am ready and willing to do what is needed to help. The ability to engage students in the classroom is also something I feel I possess. Lessons implemented encourage student participation, and place me on an equal field with the students I am teaching. The instructor cannot be the head of the class at all times; a teacher must know when it is best to let students teach themselves.
While my passion for English will always be present, the decision on what content to major in came second; my goal has always been to become an educator. Students need to have instructors that are knowledgeable in their content area, but I believe the most needed knowledge is how to teach, and how to reach students. Teachers play an incredible part in their communities. I want to be a positive role model to students and show them that education is important.
